DGCA Revises Air Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules, Big Win for Flyers Travel Updates

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has introduced major reforms to airline ticket cancellation and refund policies aimed at making air travel more transparent, passenger-friendly, and standardised across airlines.

The revised framework, issued under the updated Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR), is expected to come into effect from 26 March 2026 onward.

1. 48-Hour Free Cancellation & Modification Window

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a 48-hour “Look-In” period, allowing passengers to cancel or modify flight tickets without paying cancellation or amendment charges.

Key Conditions:

  • Cancellation or modification must be made within 48 hours of booking
  • Applicable only if:
    • Domestic flight departure is at least 7 days away
    • International flight departure is at least 15 days away
  • If changing flights, passengers only need to pay the fare difference, if applicable

This move brings Indian aviation closer to global consumer protection standards followed in several international markets.

2. Free Name Corrections Within 24 Hours

Passengers can now correct minor name mistakes on tickets free of charge if:

  • The correction request is made within 24 hours of booking
  • The booking was made directly through the airline’s official website or app

This rule is expected to significantly reduce travel disruptions caused by spelling mistakes or typographical errors.

 3. Mandatory Refunds Within 14 Working Days

Under the revised regulations:

  • Airlines must process refunds within 14 working days
  • The rule applies even when tickets are booked via:
    • Travel agents
    • Online travel portals
    • Third-party booking platforms

Previously, refund timelines varied widely among airlines and intermediaries, leading to numerous passenger complaints.

4. Improved Rules for Medical Emergencies

The DGCA has also strengthened guidelines related to:

  • Medical emergency cancellations
  • Unforeseen travel disruptions
  • Compassionate refund considerations

Detailed implementation will depend on airline-specific policies under the updated CAR framework.

Why These Changes Matter

The updated rules aim to:

  • Standardise airline refund processes
  • Improve transparency in ticketing policies
  • Reduce passenger stress and disputes
  • Build greater trust in India’s aviation sector
  • Align India with international passenger rights practices

Additional Important Provisions

The revised framework also states that:

  • Airlines cannot impose hidden or additional refund processing fees beyond approved fare rules
  • All unused statutory taxes and airport charges must be refunded
  • Passengers may choose refunds in:
    • Original payment mode
    • Travel credits
    • Airline vouchers

However, airlines must clearly disclose these options during cancellation.

Industry Reaction

“This reform by the DGCA is a refreshing step towards restoring passenger confidence. For years, Indian flyers have faced inconsistencies in cancellation and refund practices. With these standardised rules, transparency takes centre stage — a move that aligns perfectly with how the travel industry should evolve: fair, flexible, and customer-centric.”

Final Takeaway

The DGCA’s revised airline cancellation and refund rules represent one of the most passenger-friendly aviation policy updates in recent years. With:

  • A 48-hour free cancellation window
  • Faster refund obligations
  • Free correction flexibility
  • Improved consumer transparency

Indian air travellers can expect a more reliable and stress-free booking experience from 2026 onward.
